Francis of Paola

   Saint and Order Founder.
Francis spent a year at the Franciscan friary of San Marco in Italy and, after living as a hermit in Paola, in 1436 he started the Order of Minims (Ordo Fratres Minimorum). Members of the order were dedicated to the practice of humility. They were to live on charity and were to eat neither meat, fish, nor dairy food. Francis himself was renowned for his holiness. In obedience to the Pope, he ministered to King Louis XI of France and he acted as spiritual advisor to his son, King Charles VIII. The order spread through France, Spain and Germany and there is a Tertiary Order for those who cannot live in community, in South America.
